Apples and Butterflies and Beloved Playlists
I’m glad I filled a sketchbook page, even if at first it felt like my heart wasn’t in it tonight. Pushing past the “I don’t feel like this/I don’t know what to draw that’s good enough” thoughts and into painting and drawing as an act of love for the practice itself: is that the secret to maintaining a regular art practice?

Sketchbook Randomness
Holds up spork! (kidding!*) Well after yesterday’s lengthy post, tonight’s will be very short. I gathered a bunch of markers in fineliners in a gray/pink/purple/gold color scheme and sketched what was nearby on my desk. Hooray for being productive in kind of laid back way.

Mark Making Part 16: Fountain Pens
Yay, the mark making project continues! Fountain pens are a medium I used to think was more for literary types rather than visual artists. I’m not sure where I picked up that idea, but after reading different artist’s sketch journals and following various urban sketchers, I’ve found they are a popular sketching tool. The lines have a unique quality, compared to felt tip fineliners and other pens. And the fact that the ink blends with water can be an asset!

Drawing drills for a chaotic day
When I signed off my blog post last night, looking forward to relaxing and being refreshed for tomorrow, I jumped in the shower and got ready for bed, knowing I had taken today off. I had visions of how productive I would be, both with housework and art. And then, 12:30am, we wake up – “What’s that dripping noise?” Oh, its water, dripping in from under the top window trim. Joy. That set the tone for today!

Gesture Drawings
Nothing felt like it was working with drawing today. I started two other drawings before deciding to do some gesture drawings in Photoshop. Even then it was a bit of a struggle – my shoulder is bothering me again and I’ve been tense all day. I dislike the feeling of being impatient with myself while drawing.

Copic Marker Practice
Tonight’s practice was a pencil sketch that I inked with a new Copic drawing pen I recently bought online. I had spent the morning working on fountain pen mark making pieces (for my mark making project), including this new black pen and a brown ink Copic drawing pen I’ve had for a while. I was pleased to see these pens feel like a fountain pen, but I wanted to see if they were indeed “Copic Proof” (which I assume means waterproof/bleed proof in general). So tonight I sketched and inked a little drawing on marker paper to insert into my mixed media sketchbook. Hoping to finish the fountain pen drawings…

Cloth Fold Studies
Well, tonight was a reverse of yesterday: I spent most of the time after dinner watching the last three episodes of Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell with Ricky and left a pitifully small amount of time to make art, create a featured image, and post to here. Still, it was worth it – I love that show so much! Now I just need a show that’s like that but with sorceresses – kind of The Witcher but just the Aretuza parts. Ahem – anyway – for tonight, the quickest thing I felt like painting was a few studies of folds in fabric.
