A photo of an open sketchbook, with portrait sketches of a girl with short pink hair, half of it up in a pony tail. In most of the sketches her right eye is a flat disk. On the opposite page is the same character with blue iridescent hair and a right dragon eye, wearing a red and white raglan shirt. On the lower half of that page are different eye designs of in the style of dragon, parrot, cybernetic, cat, wolf, fae, and human. Text on top of the image says Sketchbook Share: Rebecca.

Sketchbook Share: Rebecca

Here is the last of my November 2023 character sketchbook spreads, this time featuring my OC Rebecca. Whose design I cannot figure out; I cannot seem to draw her face accurately from what I picture in my mind T_T. But an attempt was made! I’m also slogging through a precious vacation day with a sore throat and feeling under the weather generally, boooo.

Rebecca is a very “manic pixie dream girl” / mall goth type character, but mix in some eldritch horror energy as well. She could be my best example of the blend of cyberpunk and fantasy I’d like to aim for, if I could only get her design nailed down. But I believe I will eventually!

Anyway, drawing a cybernetic eye, a la Batou from Ghost in the Shell, is a lot harder than I thought it would be. It just looks like a fancy monocle below, whoops ^_^;;;

I’m happy with how the dragon eye design turned out at least. I have this idea that she’d mess with her appearance quite a bit, like a trickster rogue. It was so much fun quickly drawing other types of eyes – I want to make more of these little mini studies in my sketchbook – very simple and yet motivating.

A drawing of my OC rebecca, a manga style drawing of a woman with blue iridescent hair and a right dragon eye, wearing a red and white raglan shirt. On the lower half of that page are different eye designs of in the style of dragon, parrot, cybernetic, cat, wolf, fae, and human. A note on the bottom of the page states: Rebecca's right eye was originally a fae eye, which she had replaced with cybernetic technology. She enjoys illusion spells to change the appearance of the eye to various creatures. On rare occasions, she makes it match her left eye.

I was very proud of myself last night. At first I was moping in bed, steadily getting a worse sore throat and feeling upset that my vacation was going to be wasted. Then, I got dressed, drove to the store, and got some cold medicine and cough drops. I refilled my humidifier, gargled with warm salt water, drank a bunch of water, and went to bed early. Self care for the win. Of course I feel crappy today, but oh well. Maybe I’ll have some soup in a bit… I wish we had some Amy’s veggie No Chicken Noodle soup. I think we just have mushroom or country vegetable. I suppose I could make something in the slow cooker but like…lol not today.

For now, I’m catching up on the And That’s Why We Drink podcast, and testing out the default brushes in Procreate. I want to buy some custom brushes online, but I promised myself I’d familiarize myself with the default brushes first. So far my “Beth’s Favs” brush set includes the follow defaults: 6B Pencil, Hard Brush and Soft Brush (airbrushes), Nikko Rull, and Syrup. Of course I’ve only gotten through testing like…15% of the brushes. Looking forward to finding more favorites.

Here’s to health and good cheer in the New Year! 💖

‘Til next time.
