Fumbling Through Sketching and Inking with Procreate

Now that I am pretty well set on Procreate brushes (what with testing out all the default brushes and my mini-shopping spree on brush packs that followed), it’s time to put them to use! Alas, I’m still feeling clumsy and hesitant with my lines and this post shares my stop/start progress on this drawing from the last couple days.

  • A photo of an open sketchbook, with portrait sketches of a girl with short pink hair, half of it up in a pony tail. In most of the sketches her right eye is a flat disk. On the opposite page is the same character with blue iridescent hair and a right dragon eye, wearing a red and white raglan shirt. On the lower half of that page are different eye designs of in the style of dragon, parrot, cybernetic, cat, wolf, fae, and human. Text on top of the image says Sketchbook Share: Rebecca.

Here is the last of my November 2023 character sketchbook spreads, this time featuring my OC Rebecca. Whose design I cannot figure out; I cannot seem to draw her face accurately from what I picture in my mind T_T. But an attempt was made! I’m also slogging through a precious vacation day with a sore throat and feeling under the weather generally, boooo.

  • A photo of an open sketchbook showing a page on the left with multiple face studies of my original character Lore. On the right page is a larger Copic marker drawing of the character in a red doublet. Text on top of the image says Sketchbook Share: Lore.

So I wasn’t as productive as I hoped Wednesday, after posting in here T_T. I felt exhausted around 6:30pm and could just not get moving. So alas, no dance practice. I did manage much later in the evening to work out for like 20 minutes on the simple aerobic step we have (listening to Gundam Wing music ^_^), and that helped cheer me up a little. I think I’m just like a little worn out from the last month or so. But hey! More original character sketches to share from the end of November!

  • Photo of an open sketchbook, showing a page of gestural ink sketches of a woman with long, wavy, purple hair. On the opposite page is a Copic marker drawing of the same character facing forward; she is wearing jeweled earrings and a necklace. Below that are sketches of little sections of lace designs and a dressing gown design.

This is the third of my November OC sketchbook spreads, featuring Ianthenna, from my In Between series (which… I have not forgotten about, I swear). I still struggle with a consistent look for my characters, where the features are specific and stylized enough. For practicing quick portraits, though, I consider this page a success. Because this character is often wearing fancy dressing gowns and pajama type outfits (living in a type of dream plane of existence), I also wanted to practice frilly lace collars and cuffs, as that’s what I envision them wearing most of the time.

    Sketchbook Share: Ariennha

Last post, I mentioned a series of OC sketchbook pages I filled, starting with Reiellasara and now moving on to Ariennha. Ariennha is a character very close to my heart, even if I haven’t drawn her much – I’ve spent many an hour daydreaming stories and world building in my mind over the years. She’s definitely got Mary Sue energy, but I honestly do not care, I love the character. But why haven’t I made very much art of those daydreams? The trick to getting those ideas down as drawings is to just Nike-style “Do It”.

  • Featured image collage of several drawings of a blonde woman with a silver circlet on her head. There is text on the middle right of the image that says Childhood Drawing Redux. In the top corner of one drawing is the name of the character: Reiellasara.

    Childhood Drawing Redux

Oooooo, the dark theme with aqua text is back; you know I’m feeling nostalgic, ha! I just can’t stick with a light background. Maybe one of these days I’ll make a site theme that has a dark/light toggle, so if it’s really annoying to others it can be toggled off. Anyway, I recently organized a 3-ring binder with my oldest artwork from middle school and high school, and decided to tackle redrawing as much of the contents as possible, starting with the oldest.

  • Featured image of In Between series part 2 and 3. The left side shows a woman in purple hair wearing a pink dressing gown and holding a lit candle. The Right shows a similar woman with purple hair in a green and purple dressing gown, in a more detailed dark hallway.

In Between – Part 3: Wandering the Halls

I finished this third piece in the In Between series at the end of this past April. I used my iPad, but I am still fairly new to painting with it. I felt like I was fighting against the technology, and unsure of how to use it. Oh, and being indecisive about the color palette – that slowed me down quite a bit. 😅 I’ve bookmarked some online courses for Procreate, so perhaps I’ll get a bit less awkward soon.
