A Blargggh Type of Sunday
I had a longer drive this morning coming back from visiting family, and the traffic was so very unenjoyable – people going way, way over the speed limit and weaving their cars across three or four lanes of the interstate, and several going quite under the speed limit. Like ugh, why. And usually traffic isn’t quite so bad the route I go, but all the lanes of the interstate felt packed with cars. Booo. And I didn’t have enough coffee this morning, which is my own fault. At least today was a D&D day, but my character was left off at the end of the game rolling death saves 🥲.

More Gestural Sketches
I suppose I apply a wide definition of what a gesture drawing is – if the spirit of the drawing is meant to be gestural, even if the end result becomes too detailed or tight, I think it still counts. While drawing these pages, I was thinking of the “not this / this” photo that is on Proko’s How to Draw Gesture guide. I agree that the action lines are the quintessential nature of a gesture drawing. I just don’t always accomplish them, hah.

Gesture Drawings to the Rescue
I was really struggling to get started drawing tonight. I opened my sketchbook, sketching and erasing the same figure like 10 times before just sketching and inking a couple of face studies. Those also felt sloppy and forced. Fortunately, given I didn’t want to stay up too late tonight, the time crunch pushed me towards some quick gestures instead. And I really like how they turned out!

Gesture Drawings
Nothing felt like it was working with drawing today. I started two other drawings before deciding to do some gesture drawings in Photoshop. Even then it was a bit of a struggle – my shoulder is bothering me again and I’ve been tense all day. I dislike the feeling of being impatient with myself while drawing.

Gesture Drawing Practice in Photoshop
Tonight’s art practice is gesture drawings, as the stylized faces were feeling a bit too repetitive. Happily, there’s always opportunity for variation in a drawing practice. No need to feel bored!

Mark Making Part 13: Charcoal Pencils
How can time both seem stuck in amber while also moving at warp speed? Most days, it feels like the evening passes before I can motivate myself to draw or paint. Yet every day feel so similar, it’s hard to believe the seasons are still changing, fall to winter. I worked through using almost all my charcoal pencils back at the end of September, before moving. Then finished out the rest at the end of October. So now it’s nearing the end of November that I’m sharing them! At this rate, I’ll probably finish my haphazard mark-making “use all my art supplies” project in *checks calendar* meh. Spring? So here…

Mark Making Part 12: Soft Pastels
Now we’ve come to the dry mediums that I rarely use, such as pastel – and next after this, charcoal. Ever since moving to my own apartment (eek, 10 years ago ::stares into the far distance over the insistent passage of time::), I just prefer to avoid potential mess. I miss having studio space – or at the very least space in my parents’ house where I was less worried about losing a security deposit if I spilled a bunch of charcoal dust into the carpet. I’ve been looking at photos and videos of art studios recently, pining over creating an improved setup. Most of the studio tour videos I…
